Case Study
James E
James joined the Trailblazer project in early September 2025 and has settled into the programme quickly. He has demonstrated reliability, a positive attitude and a strong willingness to learn. In a short space of time, James has shown noticeable improvements in confidence and social engagement, becoming far more comfortable within the group and discovering new strengths he didn’t realise he had.
James is a young adult with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome and has additional learning needs (ALN). Before joining the project, James often struggled with confidence and tended to be very quiet in group environments. He found it difficult to start conversations or contribute during activities and usually preferred to keep to himself. He joined Trailblazer hoping to build confidence, develop practical skills and get used to working in a structured setting with clear routines and expectations. Despite his initial shyness, staff quickly recognised his potential. James responds particularly well to predictable environments, calm guidance and tasks that allow him to work at his own pace while still being supported.
Background
James’ Journey
Although James has only been engaged with the project for a relatively short period of time,
he has already made meaningful and measurable progress across several outcome areas.
His confidence has increased significantly, and he now engages more comfortably within group activities. James is more communicative, relaxed, and demonstrates growing independence when completing structured tasks.
James has worked towards and achieved an Improving Own Confidence qualification with Adult Learning Wales, which has supported noticeable improvements in his confidence, self-belief, and willingness to engage with learning. Completing this qualification has helped James recognise his own abilities and strengths, reinforcing a sense of
achievement and positively contributing to his motivation and engagement across the project.
James has actively participated in the Growing Space community group, where he has developed positive relationships with both staff and peers. Through regular attendance and engagement, he has become more comfortable in social settings and now contributes more naturally to group conversations and activities. This has supported his sense of belonging and reduced social anxiety.
In addition, James has developed important life skills through his involvement in the project. These include following instructions, managing tasks from start to finish, improving focus and concentration, and developing greater independence within a supported
environment. Building routine and structure has also supported his organisation, time awareness, and confidence in managing everyday activities.
As James continues with the project, the focus will remain on further developing his employability, life skills, and confidence, while supporting him to explore future pathways aligned with his strengths and interests. His early progress demonstrates the positive
impact of structured support, community engagement, and accessible learning opportunities
Lessons Learnt
Creative activities can be especially powerful in helping quieter participants build confidence
and uncover strengths.A consistent structure with clear expectations has supported James’ independence
and growth.Social confidence can develop quickly when participants feel valued, safe and supported.
Allowing James to work at his own pace, while gradually increasing challenge, has helped
him remain calm and focused.Positive reinforcement and celebrating small achievements strengthened his
motivation and engagement.
