Case Study
Karen H
Karen joined the Trailblazer project with Learn & Grow following a period of significant mental health difficulty. Since engaging with the project, she has made steady and meaningful progress in rebuilding confidence, independence, and social engagement. Karen’s journey has evolved from personal recovery to active contribution, and she now plays a peer mentor role, using her lived experience to support and encourage others.
Prior to engaging with the Trailblazer project, Karen experienced severe anxiety and depression following a serious road traffic collision. This resulted in frequent panic attacks, significant distress, and difficulty leaving her home independently. Social interaction became challenging, and Karen required reassurance and support in unfamiliar environments.
Karen joined the Trailblazer project seeking a safe and welcoming space where she could begin to rebuild confidence, regain independence, and reconnect with others at a pace that felt manageable. At the point of engagement, Karen presented as withdrawn and anxious, with limited confidence in her ability to participate in group settings.
Background
Karen’s Journey
Karen engaged consistently with the Trailblazer project and responded well to its structured, wellbeing-focused approach, which provided a safe, calm, and supportive. Initially quiet and reserved, she benefited from predictable routines, clear guidance, and a calm, non-judgemental environment. Over time, Karen became more settled and confident within sessions.
Creative activities became a key area of engagement for Karen. Through arts and crafts, she demonstrated strong practical ability, creativity, and attention to detail. These activities provided a meaningful outlet for expression and played an important role in supporting her emotional wellbeing. As he cconfidence grew, Karen began to take greater pride in her work and engage more openly with others during sessions.
Alongside creative work, Karen developed practical life skills through structured activities and by engaging with Adult Learning Wales learning activities. She became more confident following instructions, managing tasks from start to finish, maintaining focus, and working independently. Establishing routine and structure supported improvements in organisation, time awareness, and self-belief.
As Karen’s confidence continued to develop, she naturally began offering reassurance and encouragement to other participants, particularly those experiencing anxiety or low confidence. Drawing on her own lived experience, she demonstrated empathy, patience, and understanding. Staff recognised these strengths and supported Karen’s progression into a peer mentor role.
In this role, Karen contributes positively to the group environment by supporting others, modelling resilience, and helping foster a sense of safety and belonging. Becoming a peer mentor has further strengthened her confidence, sense of purpose, and connection to the community.
